From 14th December 1997 to 26th January 1998 we, Doreen and Andreas as well as two more friends, travelled six weeks across Australia.
We started the journey in Cairns/Queensland and drove with a hired car to the south. Some of our stops were Townsville, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide. From here we made a trip to Kangaroo Island before we flew to Alice Springs in the Red Center of Australia. There we had two 4WD Bushcamper to go to Palm Valley in the Finke Gorge, Kings Canyon, Ayers Rock and the Olgas and back to Alice Springs. Here we stepped into a plane which took us to the Top End of Australia to Darwin. After some days in the Kakadu National Park and Litchfield National Park we finished our journey of 16,000 kilometers across Australia in Darwin.
The beauty and variety of this continent, the unique fauna and flora and last but not least the kind Australians we met during our journey left deep impressions in our minds. This was the reason why we travelled to Australia again from 25th May to 17th June 2000. This time we visited the western part where still not so many tourists come to yet. We started in Perth and moved via Nambung N.P., Kalbarri N.P. an d Monkey Mia to Coral bay, where we made a snorkeling cruise at the Ningaloo Reef for one day. Then we moved to the Karijini N.P. and via Port Hedland to Broome. From there we crossed the Kimberlys driving the Gibb River Road, had a scenic flight across the Bungle Bungles from Kununurra and moved to Katherine then. After spending one day in the Nitmiluk N.P. we moved to Darwin and finished our travel there after about 6,500 kilometers.
But even though we think back to this travels almost everyday and many people do so since they once had been in Australia.
We created this pages to share our experiences with others, to hand over information and maybe to get some feedback which could be useful for our own plans. We try to keep them up-to-date, to extend and to improve them. If you have any comments, do not hesitate to tell us. You´re welcome.
